2023 CNIR workshop
The CNIR workshop took place on December 21st! The event featured food and games, open to all center members and acquaintances. Jungwoo, Euijin, and Hongji worked hard for the workshop as part of the Brain Explorer (student council of the Center). Furthermore, there were many things to celebrate. Euijin received the best-dresser award for two consecutive years! Jungwoo received a paper award, while Hongji and Sohee were honored with poster awards! Congratulations to all!
2023 Cocoan lab end-year party
Cocoan Lab had 2023 end-year party! We all had lunch together and then either played e-sports or went to escape rooms. Later, we all got together and played group games like solving quizzes about each other and exchanging secret gifts! Bye-bye 2023, and hello 2024!

Byeol visited Cocoan lab
Byeol, our beloved alumni, visited our lab. It’s been a while since 2021. She gave an amazing presentation on her research projects. We also had a great time with our current lab members and the alumni (Byeol, Eunjin, Hyemin, Hyebin). Hope to see you all at the next homecoming party!

Korean Society for Brain and Neural Sciences 2023
Cocoan lab attended the annual meeting of the Korean Society for Brain and Neural Sciences. Hongji and Lada gave poster presentations of their recent work. Wani received the Scitech Korea Young Neuroscientist Award. Congratulations!

COCOAN lab attended ‘2023 한국뇌신경과학회 고등인지분과 하계 워크샵 (also called Neurosplah)’ held in Jecheon. Hongji and Euijin gave poster presentations for their recent projects.

Cocoan lab at OHBM 2023
Cocoan lab attended the annual meeting of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM) held in Montreal, Canada. Hongji gave oral and poster presentations, and Suhwan and Youngeun presented the posters on their research projects. We also had a great time with other labs of Drs. Mathieu Roy, Etienne Vachon-Presseau, Emily Finn, and many others.
Cocoan lab at McGill University
Wani, Suhwan, Hongji, Youngeun, and Eui-Jin visited McGill University in Montreal. They attended the joint meeting with Mathieu Roy and Etienne Vachon-Presseau’s lab and gave research talks. It was a great opportunity to discuss research with Mathieu and Etienne. Hope to see them again at 2024 OHBM in Seoul!
Jung In Lee and Sihyun Kim successfully completed 2023 CNIR summer school internship program at the Cocoan lab
They worked on the “music-induced analgesia” project with mentorship from Eui-Jin Jung and Saehyun Lee. Their roles encompassed tasks such as conducting literature reviews, enhancing the study design, participating in behavior studies and pilot scans, analyzing the data, and delivering an impressive final presentation. Their presence was a joy and Jung In joined our lab as an undergraduate research assistant! Also, everyone in the lab played a Korean traditional game (윷놀이; Yut-nori) together. Great job Jung In and Sihyun!

Wani gave talks at multiple labs in Germany
Wani visited multiple pain research labs in Germany. He was invited to give a talk at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, where a joint Korea-German symposium on brain sciences was being held. He took the opportunity to visit the labs of Drs. Christian Büchel and Markus Ploner. Wani is grateful for the hospitality of both labs.
Jungwoo’s first paper was published on Nature Communications!
Jungwoo’s first first-authored paper has been published in Nature Communications. The title is “A Dorsomedial Prefrontal Cortex-based Dynamic Functional Connectivity Model of Rumination.” The study is featured in PNAS and many other news outlets. Congratulations!

Cocoan lab and LSD lab (Laboratory of Social Decision Neuroscience led by Prof. Hackjin Kim) had a joint lab meeting. It was so much fun!

Jungwoo attended COSYNE
Jungwoo’s work was accepted at COSYNE 2023! The paper title was “Geometrical Features of Neural Trajectory as a Computational Motif for the Cue-Stimulus Integration of Pain.” Congrats, Jungwoo!

Wani gave talks at Tokyo
Wani and Seok-Jun were invited to give talks in Tokyo. First, Wani and Seok-Jun gave a talk at Araya entitled “Predictive modeling, cortical hierarchy, and their computational implications” as a part of the talk series named Consciousness Club Tokyo. The talk is available on YouTube. There Wani met Dan Lee, an old friend from Tor’s lab. Then, Wani and Seok-Jun visited RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS) to give talks in Hakwan Lau’s lab. It was so much fun, so we have no pictures. Then, Wani gave a talk at the International Research Center for Neurointelligence (IRCN), University of Tokyo. Thankfully, Mingbo Cai hosted Wani. The talk title was “Understanding Pain: Insights from the Brain and Artificial Intelligence.”
